Laurie attends a Catholic university studying philosophy with the intention of entering seminary school. They present androgynous and have no real gender preference, but are widely accepted by the religious community due to their assigned gender.
Laurie and Shannon met in Laurie's final year of high school. Being a year older than Shannon, they spent a year apart. Shannon's family disapproved of their long-distance relationship and though Shannon didn't care, Laurie appeased her parents by encouraging Shannon to go through with the break and that in a year's time they could reevaluate. Shannon enrolled in Laurie's university as an art major, which thoroughly pissed off her parents. They live together because Shannon's family cut her off.
Laurie hasn't thought about gender aside from being conventionally attractive and presenting more feminine than masculine. What they lacked in appearance regarding gender norms, they made up for in athletics in grade school to gain respect and avoid being bullied. Laurie was the lacrosse team captain in high school.
